Why Brittany is Ideal for a LandyCampers Adventure

Brittany feels a world away from the rest of France. Known for its mix of rocky coastlines, mystical forests, and vibrant cultural history, Brittany’s diverse landscape is perfect for those seeking a true off-grid experience. A LandyCamper allows you to experience this region on your own terms, from remote cliffside campsites to quiet inland forests. With so many hidden gems, Brittany promises a journey that’s as scenic as it is full of discoveries.

Key Destinations for Your Brittany Adventure

1. The Gulf of Morbihan

  • Overview: The Gulf of Morbihan, meaning “little sea” in Breton, is a unique coastal area dotted with islands and wrapped in legends. This scenic spot is perfect for kayaking, cycling, and hiking, with views that capture Brittany’s intense coastal beauty.

  • Highlights: Explore the coast by foot along the GR34 trail or take a boat tour to see the islands up close. This area is also famous for its birdwatching opportunities and fresh seafood.

  • LandyCampers Tip: Set up camp on one of the many picturesque sites near the water’s edge and watch the changing tides—perfect for photographers and nature lovers alike.

2. Carnac and Its Megalithic Monuments

  • Overview: One of Europe’s most famous prehistoric sites, Carnac is home to thousands of standing stones known as menhirs, as well as dolmens and ancient burial mounds. Walking among these ancient stones feels like stepping back in time.

  • Highlights: The Alignments of Carnac are awe-inspiring, with rows of stones stretching for hundreds of meters. Visit the Maison des Mégalithes to learn about the history and theories surrounding these enigmatic structures.

  • LandyCampers Tip: Park at Le Menéc for easy access to the site. Try visiting early in the morning or around sunset for a quieter, more magical atmosphere.

3. Pointe du Raz and the Western Cliffs

  • Overview: Known as one of France’s most striking coastal landscapes, Pointe du Raz is where rugged cliffs meet the vast Atlantic. The views are stunning, and the fresh sea air adds to the sense of adventure.

  • Highlights: Hiking the cliffside trails offers breath-taking views, and the nearby Pointe du Van is equally beautiful but less crowded. This is a great area for hiking, photography, and relaxing in nature.

  • LandyCampers Tip: Consider camping at one of the nearby seaside spots to take in the dramatic views day and night.

4. The Crozon Peninsula

  • Overview: The Crozon Peninsula captures the essence of Brittany, with heather-covered moorlands, towering cliffs, and beautiful beaches. It’s also rich in WWII history, with bunkers and memorials to explore.

  • Highlights: Check out the Alignements de Lagatjar, another set of standing stones, and the Pointe de Pen-Hir for some of the best views on the peninsula.

  • LandyCampers Tip: Morgat Beach is a charming spot to relax and enjoy the water (and the location of my Grandparents' honeymoon in the late 1940s - judging by the photos we have it's charm has lasted almost a century!).

  • LandyCampers Tip: Stay nearby and explore the forest in the early evening to soak in the fairy-tale atmosphere. The dense forest and trails make for a truly immersive experience.

6. Surfing and Seaside Charm at La Torche and Concarneau

  • Overview: As surf-instructors, surfing was always going to be on our list of 'must dos'! La Torche is a beloved surf spot with a relaxed vibe, while Concarneau is a charming seaside town with a rich maritime history. Both spots are ideal for winding down at the end of your trip. It's a suitable spot for beginners and intermediates alike, with a number of surf schools to take lessons or rent kit!

  • Highlights: Ride the waves at La Torche (less crowded than the southern beaches of France) or explore Concarneau’s walled Old Town. The area around La Torche offers long sandy beaches perfect for walks and sunsets.

  • LandyCamper Tip: Camp nearby to make the most of La Torche’s beach and get into the water at sunrise, then take a day trip to Concarneau for a more laid-back seaside experience.

Activities to Make the Most of Your Brittany Adventure

  • Surfing: Brittany is well known for surf spots like La Torche, and has breaks for all levels of surfer! Surf schools will rent you gear if you're not travelling with your own, and offer lessons if needed - if you want to go out on your own, be sure to have a chat with them first, they'll be the best source of local knowledge of where to go, and safety info on tides, rips etc, which is invaluable for any surfer at a new spot.

  • Kayaking and Water Sports: Brittany’s bays and rivers are ideal for kayaking, sailing, and even paddleboarding. The Gulf of Morbihan, in particular, offers calm waters for all levels.

  • Local Cuisine and Markets: Brittany’s seafood is renowned. Sample fresh oysters in Cancale, crêpes (galettes) from a local café, or pick up seasonal produce at a market. For a real treat, visit a local cidrerie for traditional Breton cider.

  • Photography: Brittany’s diverse landscape and unique light make it a dream destination for photographers. Capture everything from rugged cliffs to ancient stones in morning and evening light.

LandyCampers' Tips for Traveling in Brittany

  • Pack for All Weather: Brittany’s weather is famously changeable, so pack waterproof gear, extra blankets, and layered clothing.

  • Municipal Campsites Can Be Great: Generally the cheaper option, France's network of 'municipal campsites' are more basic than some of the larger commercial sites, but consequently tend to be more quiet - and many are just as well situated (or better) than their more pricey alternatives!

  • Driving Tips: Some roads in Brittany, especially in small towns, can be narrow. The Defender’s compact design makes it suitable, but drive slowly and plan routes that avoid congested areas.
